Is your X account marked as sensitive? How to check and fix it
A sensitive label on one post is annoying. A label on your whole account can blur everything you post. Here's how to tell if your account is affected, why it happens, and how to get it reviewed.
Signs your account has a sensitive label
- X sent you a notification or email saying a label was added to your account and it may affect your reach.
- Every new photo or video you post appears behind a warning, even ordinary ones, and you haven't turned on the "mark media as sensitive" setting yourself.
- Friends who haven't opted in to sensitive media say your media is always blurred.
- Your views or engagement dropped suddenly across all your posts at once, not just one.
First, rule out your own settings. Open Settings and privacy → Privacy and safety → Your posts and check whether Mark media you post as having material that may be sensitive is on. If it is and you didn't turn it on, X may have switched it on for you, or someone else with access to the account did.
Why X labels whole accounts
X's Adult Content Policy and Violent Content Policy use the same wording: if you regularly post adult or graphic media, you should adjust your media settings, and "if you continue to fail marking your posts, we will adjust your account settings for you." In practice, an account label usually follows one of these:
- several posts were flagged as sensitive in a short period, whether by automated checks or after reports;
- a post went viral and drew a wave of reports;
- your profile photo or header was considered sensitive (X doesn't allow adult or violent media in those places);
- an automated system or bug made a mistake. In January 2024, for example, X fixed an issue that mislabeled ordinary posts.
X doesn't publish how many flagged posts, or how many reports, it takes to label an account.
How to get the label reviewed
- Clean up first. Delete or relabel any posts that genuinely needed a warning, and make sure your profile photo, header and any List or Community banners are safe for work.
- Use the review link in X's notice if there is one. Otherwise, go through X's appeal form at help.x.com. Both content policies say: "If you believe we made a mistake, you can submit an appeal."
- Be brief and specific. Say what your account posts and why it doesn't need a warning, for example: "This is a sports photography account. None of my media contains adult or graphic content."
- Wait, and don't create a new account to get around it. Some users report that labels are removed after review, with a message that the account was not found to contain sensitive media. X doesn't publish review times, and making new accounts to avoid enforcement can break X's rules.
Keeping it from coming back
- Label the posts that need it yourself. A one-time content warning on a genuinely graphic or adult post shows you're following the policy.
- Check borderline media before posting. Swimwear, fitness, art with skin, injuries, horror and medical images are the most common false alarms. If a check suggests a photo is likely to be flagged, crop it, choose another, or label it yourself.
- Spread out risky posts. Several flagged posts close together seem more likely to lead to an account-level label than one now and then. X doesn't publish the rule, but it's a sensible precaution.

Will It Flag? is an independent tool and is not affiliated with X Corp. X's rules and app menus change from time to time; this guide reflects X's published Help Center policies as of 27 October 2026. When in doubt, X's own Adult Content and Violent Content policies are the source of truth.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my X account is marked sensitive?
Common signs are a notice from X that a label was added to your account, all your new media showing behind a warning, and a sudden drop in reach across every post. Also check Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Your posts, to see whether the 'mark media as sensitive' option was switched on.
Why did X mark my whole account as sensitive?
X's policies say that if an account keeps posting adult or graphic media without marking it, X may adjust the account's media setting itself. Account labels can also follow waves of reports, a sensitive profile photo or header, or occasionally a mistake by an automated system.
How do I get a sensitive label removed from my X account?
Remove or relabel any posts that genuinely needed a warning, make sure your profile images are safe for work, then appeal using the link in X's notice or X's appeal form on help.x.com. Explain briefly why your content doesn't need a warning.
How long does a sensitive account label last?
X doesn't publish a fixed duration or review time. Some users report labels being removed soon after a successful review. Others stay until the account's settings or content change.
